What is CNC Punching?

CNC punching is a high-speed metal fabrication process that uses a turret press equipped with multiple tool stations to create holes, cutouts, and formed features in sheet metal. Unlike laser cutting which vaporizes material along a continuous path, punching removes material in discrete strikes, creating clean, burr-minimized holes at exceptional speeds.

“Beyond cutting holes, turret punches perform forming operations—creating louvers, lances, embossments, countersinks, and knockouts directly in the punching cycle.”

Our CNC Punching Capabilities

Advanced CNC turret presses configured for both prototype flexibility and high-volume production efficiency. With automated material handling and extensive tooling libraries, we deliver consistent quality from 50 pieces to 500,000+ annually.

Design Tips for Better Punched Parts

Follow these guidelines to optimize your designs for CNC punching. Proper DFM reduces tooling costs, improves quality, and shortens lead times.

⭕ Minimum Hole Diameter

Hole diameter should be at least equal to material thickness. Smaller holes risk punch breakage and require specialized tooling.

Min hole Ø ≥ Material thickness (T)

↔️ Hole-to-Hole Spacing

Maintain minimum 2× material thickness between holes to prevent distortion and ensure structural integrity.

Spacing ≥ 2T (2.5T recommended)

📏 Hole-to-Edge Distance

Keep holes at least 1.5× material thickness from edges. Closer positioning causes edge deformation.

Edge distance ≥ 1.5T

⚠️ Avoid Common Mistake

Don't design holes closer than 3mm to a bend line. Material stretching during bending will distort hole shape and position.

Hole-to-bend ≥ 3mm + bend radius

Standard Punching Tolerances

Feature Type Standard Tolerance Precision Tolerance Notes
Hole Position (same surface) ±0.13mm ±0.05mm Equipment capability
Hole-to-Hole ±0.15mm ±0.10mm Cumulative factors
Hole-to-Edge ±0.20mm ±0.10mm
Hole Diameter ±0.10mm ±0.05mm Tooling dependent
Feature-to-Bend ±0.25mm ±0.15mm Material stretching

Punching vs. Laser Cutting: Which Process Fits Your Project?

Both CNC punching and laser cutting create precise holes and cutouts in sheet metal, but each process excels in different applications. Understanding when to specify punching helps you optimize both cost and quality.

Factor CNC Punching Laser Cutting
Setup Cost Moderate (tooling selection) Low (programming only)
Per-Feature Cost Very low at volume Consistent regardless of volume
Formed Features Yes—integrated Requires secondary ops
Ideal Volume 100-500,000+ pieces 1-500 pieces
Speed (holes) 300-600 hits/minute 10-30 holes/minute
Edge Quality Clean, slight rollover Heat-affected zone possible
Complex Contours Limited Excellent
Max Thickness 6mm typical 25mm+

Choose Punching When:

  • Your part requires 20+ holes or features
  • You need formed features (louvers, countersinks, embossments) integrated with cutting
  • Production volumes exceed 100 pieces
  • Material thickness is under 4mm
  • Cost-per-part is a primary consideration for recurring orders

🔆 Choose Laser Cutting When:

  • Parts have complex contours or artistic profiles
  • You need intricate interior cutouts with tight corner radii
  • Material thickness exceeds 6mm
  • Volumes are very low (under 20 pieces)
  • Edge quality for visible surfaces is critical
💰

The Bottom Line on Cost

For parts with numerous holes and forming requirements, punching typically reduces per-part costs by 30-50% compared to laser cutting plus secondary forming operations. Our engineering team analyzes every project to recommend the optimal process—or combination of processes—for your specific requirements.
